What It Measures

The percentage of Americans expressing a "great deal" or "fair amount" of trust and confidence in the federal judicial branch, including the Supreme Court. Drawn from Gallup, Pew Research, and Marquette Law School's Supreme Court poll.

Why It Matters

The judiciary's legitimacy rests almost entirely on public acceptance, since courts lack enforcement power of their own. Declining public confidence in courts — especially the Supreme Court — can undermine voluntary compliance with rulings, encourage institutional attacks, and damage rule-of-law norms.

Data Caveats

Survey questions vary across organizations — compare time series within an organization, not across.
